First harvest from temp garden

Yesterday I got the first harvest from my temporary veg garden at our temporary house. Apart from the established orchard, not much is growing here except lawn.

So I planted some dwarf French beans (purple princess) which I had sown in a container earlier in the season. They were just in flower when planted, so after 10 days I get to harvest the first beans!

So far I only have some basil planted, but I mean to sow some salad greens soon.

Back on the web

Phew, step one is done: Our house has been transferred to the new owners, we have been homeless for 8 days and we camped in our small tent during that time. Then we moved into our temporary new house and our stuff arrived fromĀ  storage and finally the cats are back from their hotel.

We’re working on step two: Buying a house just accross the border in Germany.

But for now we’re settling in in our rented house. I just made a bit of applesauce from apples from our garden here. The house has a large garden as we measure these things here in the Netherlands and it has an orchard of about 10 very neglected fruit trees. When I saw that I knew we’d want to rent this house! We also harvested some plums.

The apple tree may be a “Transparante Blanche ” orĀ  “Yellow Transparent”. A very early apple which starts to taste ‘mealy’ very quickly. The cable to connect our camera with the pc is still boxed somewhere… pictures to follow after it has been retrieved.

Colorado kever / beetle

Op ons volkstuincomplex zijn larven van de coloradokever gevonden. Geadviseerd wordt om het loof van de aardappels te verwijderen en af te voeren van de tuin. Dus dat doen we maar.

Colorado beetle larvae have been found on our allotment site. I’ll remove the tops of the potatoes today and remove them from the site. Tomorrow I’m moving house, so I’ll dig up the potatoes in a couple of weeks.

As of thsi week I’ve been eating tomatoes out of the polytunnel. Variety: Ida Gold. This variety is the only one that has been giving me harvest consistently, even in years of blight. This is because it is so early that no matter what, I’ll have been able to harvest some before disaster strikes.

Potato experiment concluded

Last year’s potato harvest started to chit uncontrollably so I had to throw the last potatoes away. I saved two and put them in a bucket of soil each and kept them in the attic. By 1 March they started to get very leggy so I put the buckets in the poly tunnel. Those first stalks froze, but the plants grew happily. Around mid April I put them in a sheltered spot outside. For the last few days the plants weren’t looking so good anymore, though, so today I decided to harvest.

These must be the earliest first early potatoes ever. 1150 grams. And they taste soooo good!
